Course Description

Learning to sail could not be easier at the Key West Sailing Club. Within a few short days you will be a sailor, with skills that will support a lifetime of adventure.
Basic Sailing 101 is the perfect course for those with no prior experience or for those looking to refresh prior sailing experiences.
We are convinced that the most effective learning is kinetic. So, at the Key West Sailing Club, your introduction to sails, boats, wind, and water take place 80% on the water and 20% on land.

Since we are US Sailing certified instructors, we teach the professional standards of their graduated learning system. Your instruction begins with a solid foundation in sailing terminology, sailboat rigging, personal safety and rope work. Under the guidance of your professional instructor you will quickly and seamlessly integrate these skills with the principals of sailing. In a few short days you will have the skills to command one of our club boats on your own, for your personal use.

The Key West Sailing Club’s Introduction to Sailing gives anyone the perfect opportunity to discover his or her call to a lifetime of adventure. It is fun, it is affordable and it is the easy way to discover the natural world of wind and water that surrounds our lovely island.
In this 3-hour, on-the-water session you will not only enjoy a sensory extravaganza on our beautiful clear waters, you will actually have the opportunity to skipper! Under the guidance of a professional instructor you will learn some basic sailing theory, boat handling and terminology. What’s more, you will acquire a new appreciation for this elegant sport. By the time you return to the dock, your transformation from a landlubber to an old salt will be well underway.

While Introduction to Sailing provides a valuable insight into the world of sailing, it is definitely not a substitute for comprehensive sailing instruction. Rather, it is intended to give you a real-life experience of this wonderful sport, allowing you to intelligently choose sailing as your passport to a lifetime of adventure.
