The Women's Sailing Program is a member's sponsored program that began January 2003. For Women and by Women this program's intention is to give Women an opportunity to learn to sail in a supportive and fun atmosphere.
Since its inception many women have come together to learn and share their sailing experience. Beginners are offered basic sailing instruction before being matched up with women with intermediate to advanced sailing skills. From the parts of boats to the points of sailing, rigging and derigging of the boats, basics of leaving and returning to the docks, right of way, safety and basic sailing are all covered during this program. Then it is time to sail!
Women are encouraged to sail in their comfort zone to began with, either sailing with another women on one of the clubs Victoria 18s or jumping into one of the club Prams on their own. Some of the women with more experience sail along beside the newer sailors helping them when needed. The opportunity to learn to sail different boats starting with the Prams, and then moving on to a Sunfish, JY 15s, or a 420 as well as the clubs keel boats is supported. There is nothing better than the feeling of accomplishment when someone learns to single hand a boat!
The program runs each winter from January through April and is free to all participants. Non-members are not allowed to sail in boats without a member on board, but are more than welcome to join the club at anytime.
The head of the Women's Sailing Program is Nancy J. Curran and she writes: "Hello my fellow sailors, Sailing for fun is my theme this year for the Women's Sailing Program. For those who are looking to learn the basics of sailing KWSC now has a program taught by Dave Oatway that you can participate in . The next program begins in Jan. If you know of anyone who wants to learn to sail please refer them to Dave daveo17@bellsouth.net. If you'd like private lessons Celine Peccatte is available for that celinepeccatte@hotmail.com. If you want to hone your skills, be with other women sailing, and just have fun that is what I am offering this year! I am setting aside Sat at 2 PM for our time for sailing. One Sat per month there is a club race, so we will have to work around that. I am also thinking that one day midweek would be fun as well. I am open to suggestions of what you'd like to do. I am free to begin on Jan 12, if anyone else wants to start sooner, feel free. Each week we can see what the wind is offering us, and head on out for impromptu races, sailing destinations and explorations. If you have never been out to the Legacy, up Jewfish Channel or over to the submarine base this is your time to do it! Last year 3 of us sailed around the island (yes all the way around the island) and it was a blast. So I am game for whatever...as long as the wind is a blowing. Also if you are seriously interested in another sail in the Bahamas, I am too! We had a ball sailing the Exumas and camping out on the islands. So if you are interested in going let me know, and I'll set up another adventure in Paradise! See you at the club soon. Wishing you happy holidays and a new year of health, well-being and a whole lot of sailing! Nancy Nancy J. Curran 305-296-7352 508-737-3211 Visit my website at www.yogaonthebeach.citymax.com
